"Kaluzhskaya" is a relatively new metro station, opened in 1974. As most of peripheral (at that time) stations "Kaluzhskaya" was not only shallow (only 10 m deep, compare this with 40-50 m stations in the downtown Moscow) but also lacked outer vestibules. The interior was pretty standard: granite columns, granite floor and walls decorated with white tiles.
The station got its name from the direction (from Kremlin to Kaluga town). Actually, the name "Kaluzhskaya" initially belonged to other station, much closer to the centre at Kaluzhskaya square. Nowadays this station is called "Oktyabrskaya". The square kept its name but the name of the metro station moved far to the south-west. This fact still confuses many guests of our city. "New Kaluzskaya" was an open station and was build as a temporary construction. It had no interior at all, even its floor was covered with common asphalt. Here was a terminal station of the orange line of the Moscow metro. Nowadays there's a depot at this place. Sometimes when you travel by metro to the south west you can hear not very pleasant "Our train goes to "Novye Cheryomushki". This means that all passengers must go out at "Novye Cheryomushki" and the train goes to the depot then.
Muscovites (and not only them) may feel some interest towards the fragment of the map attached to this listing. Kaluzhskoe Depot just appeared and can be seen in the very center of the map. You can also see villages Belyaevo, Zuzino and Vorontsovo (now districts of the city). Through Vorontsovo there was an old road to Kaluga. New buildings (mostly 5-store living houses) are shown in orange paint. There's a tiny piece of Lenin Avenue in the top left corner of the map. Profsoyuznaya St. ended a bit more to the south from Novye Cheryomushki metro station. A gully which occupies much of the map belonged to Kotlovka river. In our days the river was put into pipes underground at all its length to the west from Sevastopolsky Avenue (the straight line in the right part of the map). This is how the peripheral Moscow region looked like in the end of 1960ies.

"Калужская" относится к станциям относительно недавним - она была открыта в 1974 году. Как и большинство окраинных станций (на тот период развития Москвы), Калужская была не только мелкой (всего 10 метров глубины - сравните с 40-50 метровыми станциями в центре города), но и лишенной наземных вестибюлей. Отделка станции не отличалась изысками: колонны и пол отделаны гранитом, стены зала - белой плиткой.
Название станции происходит от направления (от Кремля на Калугу). Вообще, "Калужской" сначала называлась совсем другая станция, гораздо ближе к центру, на Калужской площади. Ныне это станция "Октябрьская". Название площади осталось, а название метро "переехало" далеко на юго-запад. Это по сей день сбивает с толку многих гостей столицы. "Новая Калужская" была открытой и строилась как временная. Там не было никакого интерьера, даже пол покрыли обычным асфальтом. Здесь заканчивалась оранжевая ветка метро. Сейчас на этом месте депо. Иногда, путешествуя по ветке на юго-запад, можно услышать досадное "Поезд следует до станции Новые Черемушки". Это значит, что пассажиров высадят на "Новых Черемушках", а дальше состав проследует в депо.
Москвичам (да и не только) может быть интересен фрагмент карты, который я здесь привожу. Депо Калужское только появилось (в центре). Можно видеть деревни Беляево, Зюзино и Воронцово (теперь это районы Москвы). Через Воронцово проходила старая калужская дорога. Оранжевым цветом выделены районы новой (по тем временам) застройки, преимущественно пятиэтажки. Кусочек Ленинского проспекта виден в левом верхнем углу карты, а Профсоюзная улица заканчивалась немногим южнее метро Новые Черемушки. Внушительный овраг принадлежит реке Котловка, ныне по всей длине западнее Севастопольского проспекта (прямая линия в правой части карты) заключенной в трубы под землей. Так выглядела окраинная Москва в конце 60-х годов.
