Damn! I love to work the daily Sudoku puzzles, but my kid got to the newspaper early this morning with a pair of scissors and cut up the puzzle into a bunch of pieces. I found all the pieces I could, but I'm sure I missed some of them. Here's what I found:
The main reason I'd love to solve this particular puzzle is that the solution yields the coordinates of a geocache. Once I've solved the Sudoku puzzle, I need to find the numbers in the slots indicated by A, B, C, D, E and F below:
+-----+-----+-----+
|B x x|x x x|x x x|
|x x x|x x x|C x x|
|x x x|x x A|x x x|
+-----+-----+-----+
|x x x|F x x|x x x|
|x x x|x x x|x D x|
+-----+-----+-----+
|x x x|x E x|x x x|
+-----+-----+-----+
Then let x be the three-digit number ABC and y be DEF. Finally, let u = x+y and let v = x-y. The coordinates of the cache are:
37° 20.u N 122° 07.v W
Bring a pencil or pen.
Checksum: (added 11/14/2013 -- the sum of the six digits in u and v) 18.
Congratulations to TeamOttlet for being first to find!
