Unknowns, or puzzles, are one of our favorite types of geocaches. When we found out there was a National Puzzle Day, we knew we had to create a puzzle cache in its honor.
The idea for this cache is borrowed (OK, blatantly copied, but we did ask for permission) from cacher ePeterso2. ePeterso2 is the author/hider of a fabulous Puzzle Solving 101 series of caches in Florida that give lessons in solving different types of geocaching puzzles. If we ever make it back down to Florida (and finish solving all his lessons), we hope to find his caches.
Is there really a National Puzzle Day? Yes, actually. It is one of a very large number of unusual holidays. Listed below are 175 obscure holidays in random order: 160 of them are real, 15 are fake. Find the fake ones, and you'll be able to determine the coordinates of the final location of this cache. Here's how:
Take the 15 fake holidays and list them in alphabetical order. Count the number of letters in each holiday - ignore spaces, numbers, symbols, and punctuation marks. Divide the number of letters in each holiday by 10 and take the remainder. The remainder is the value for that holiday.
Here's an example. Suppose the holiday is National "Beam Me Up, Scotty" Day. There are 25 letters in the name of that holiday - the remainder when you divide by 10 is 5, so 5 is the value for that holiday. An easy way to remember is that the remainder is always the right-most digit in the number of letters.
If you've done those three steps correctly, the numbers in order will be the coordinates for the final location of this cache.
