Geocache Description:

This cache is part of an extension to Sadexploration’s far-reaching Church Micro series.

West Malling Baptist Church

The oldest part of the existing buildings were erected in 1836, but the fellowship is older, dating back to 1827. The original building forms about half of the present chapel, this being the end nearest the street and is a grade II listed building (named as as West Malling Free Church). Initially it had no school rooms attached and no outside porch and the ground behind the chapel was used for a burial ground. The school rooms were added in 1850 and the building was re-opened on July 2nd 1851. The porch was built in 1871. In 1857 Revd. C.H. Spurgeon conducted the anniversary services in a tent on “Brookes’ Field” at the back of Swan Street where the railway now runs. The first recorded minister was the Revd. E.R.Hammond (1848-1858).

B = number of spikes in the bottom row

To the left of the gate is a white notice board with five words in large capital letters at the top.
