SFGT: Upper Independence or Wayne City Landing Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

SantaFeTrail.org: Due to the continuing problems with this site being muggled - we feel that we have no choice but to archive this site. We will be looking for another site near this section of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail to add a cache, or maybe two! We are very sorry that this site is being archived, but this secluded area has been a site that was repeatedly destroyed/stolen.

Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the larger Santa Fe Trail GeoTour: santafetrail.org/geocaching

On a paved, all-season road with a parking lot available near the interpretive site. A very short walk to the cache. Please respect private property and stay on the public interpretive side of this site. There is signage to lead you to this area.

Be sure to visit www.santafetrail.org/geocaching to learn about the PASSPORT ACTIVITY to accompany this Geo Tour. This container on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail Geo Tour is a black plastic container with an identifying Santa Fe Trail Association yellow sticker on the side of the box, under the handle and the dark green geocaching.com ID is on the side of the box with the information that provides coordinates, who set the cache and who to contact for information. Each cache contains a logbook to sign, a variety of items that provide information about the Santa Fe Trail as well as swag items. If you are participating in the Passport activity, the code word is located on the inside of the box, on the top of the lid and is clearly identified as Code Word. We ask that all cachers please respect all property at the sites where our caches are set.

The Upper Independence Landing is on the south bank of the Missouri River, north of the Cement City Road and the Missouri Portland Cement Company and about 3.25 miles north of Independence. This steamboat landing (and an earlier ferry operation) was never as successful or used as long as the Lower Independence Landing. Some of the merchandise unloaded here was carried to Santa Fe. No trace of the landing remains. SFTA and the NPS has created several interpretive panels at this site to tell of its historical significance. We have permission to place our cache here.
