Dino Alley - Brontosaurus Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pasha88: OMG! I went to do some maintenance here today and couldn’t find this one either! I really hope they weren’t taken by a Cacher who does not understand the game. Or, I could just be really really blind - in that case, if anyone else find the container here please feel free to remove and recycle it.

Geocache Description:

We are learning about dinosaurs in day camp, so I thought I should place some geocaches to share what I am learning. There are four caches in my Dino Alley series, but they are all transitionals so you can do them in any order.

These are supposed to be fun and educational, but not too hard. I hope you like them.

Apatosaurus, including the popular but scientifically redundant synonym Brontosaurus, is a genus of sauropod dinosaur that lived from about 154 to 150 million years ago, during the Jurassic Period. It was one of the largest land animals known to have ever existed, with an average length of 23 m (75 ft) and a mass of at least 16 metric tons (18 short tons). Fossils of these animals have been found in Nine Mile Quarry and Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming and at sites in Colorado,Oklahoma and Utah.

Like most sauropods, Apatosaurus had only a single large claw on each forelimb, with the first three toes on the hind limb possessing claws.

Apatosaurus was a large, long-necked four-legged animal with a long, whip-like tail. Its forelimbs were slightly shorter than its hindlimbs. It was roughly the weight of four elephants. The skull was small in comparison with the size of the animal. The jaws were lined with chisel-like teeth, suited to an herbivorous diet. Like those of other sauropods, the vertebrae of the neck carried paired spines, resulting in a wide and deep neck. The neck was, however, filled with an extensive system of weight-saving air sacs. Apatosaurus is notable for the incredibly tall spines on its vertebrae, which make up more than half the height of the individual bones Apatosaurus also had very long ribs giving it an unusually deep chest. The limb bones were also very robust.

The cache is a park and grab. Parking is available very close to the cache, on the shoulder or roadside. Please return it to it's original spot. No room for trades and BYOP. Good luck and happy caching
