Geocache Description:

This medium sized cache is not at the posted coordinates. The real one is to be found through solving a multi-puzzle. In trying to figure out how to make my usual hand held unit work again, I found a couple of new things about this technology. So I decided to make a learning puzzle for everyone else. This cache is dedicated to all my friends who like crosswords.

To find this cache you must complete two tasks: solve a crossword based on questions about mapping, orienteering and GPS technology, and then determine the GPS coordinates by substituting the number of 10 specific letters that are found in the solved crossword (for example, how many G’s, how many B’s, etc.). There are 126 letters in this puzzle. You will need 51 of them to find the coordinates of the cache.

Across:

3. This is a record of a position stored in the memory of the device described in #11.

5. The format of -99° 84.907' is _DECIMALMINUTES_.

9. The _____ is the data set containing approximate orbital positions of GPS satellites.

12. The _____ is the data set transmitted from satellites that contains very precise orbital information.

13. From satellites to your handheld unit, _____ is calculated as part of determining your position on Earth.

15. You would follow this direction to go from your current position to the geographic north pole.

16. _____ describes vertical distance from sea level.

Down:

1. and 6. Direction of travel using the tool described in #4 is in relation to a __(1)__ pointing to __(6)__.

2. At noon in the northern hemisphere, the sun can be found generally in this cardinal direction.

4. The device described in #11 is frequently used instead of this traditional tool for navigation.

6. See #1 above

7. This is the direction that you follow when going from one position to another position.

8. This is the name of the 0° meridian on a geographic map projection.

10. -99° 84.907' is a value for what coordinate of location on Earth?

11. A _____ calculates your position on earth based on transmissions from 4 or more orbiting satellites.

14. "14U", found in Manitoba, has what meaning in the Universal Transverse Mercator mapping system?

Final Coordinates:

Now count the number of each of the 10 letters below which are found in the solved crossword. Substitute the numbers for the letters to get the final coordinates of the cache.

N 49° GB.CAW’     W 099° LS.HUO’
