Come join the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge as they celebrate the 100th Anniversary of The Aleutian Islands Refuge! The Aleutian Islands Refuge was created by President Taft in 1913, later became combined with 11 Refuges as part of the expansive Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge in 1980.
Festivites begin at 1:00pm at the coordinates, and there are a handful of things going on to enjoy!
-Tour the most well-travelled federal research vessel, the R/V Tiglax (Pronounced TEK-lah, Aleut for eagle)
-Learn about research and history of the Refuge since 1913
-Discover what life at a field camp can look like
-Meet amateur radio operators as they contact others around the globe for the annual "Refuges on the Air" HAM radio event (Callsign KL7NWR)
-Meet the crew and staff members who have been to the farthest eastern reaches of the United States, and worked on the most remote sites in our great state of Alaska
There will be a logbook to sign, and local and area geocachers to meet. Come by and learn about the Refuge's plans for remote Earthcaches...so much temptation to come for remote milestones for your geocaching stats!
