Nel 1513, all’indomani della caduta di Pisa, riconquistata dai fiorentini, il Consiglio Generale, massima Magistratura della Repubblica dell’epoca, decise di ammodernare tutto il sistema difensivo della città. Lucca, infatti, era cinta da mura sin dall’epoca romana, ma fu nel 1513 che si iniziarono i lavori per dare alla cerchia protettiva l’aspetto che ha ancora oggi. In quell’anno, si diede inizio al taglio di tutti gli alberi e all’abbattimento di tutti gli edifici, anche quelli religiosi, che si trovavano sui terreni destinati al percorso delle nuove mura. Le mura, grandiose e potenti, furono di fatto solo un deterrente e non servirono mai al loro scopo primario, ovvero quello difensivo.
Oggi si celebra il cinquecentenaio delle mura e noi abbiamo voluto festeggiare questo evento posizionando questo multicache!

Lucca's walls are the largest example in Europe of walls built according to the principles of modern fortification which is completely intact in a big city. The actual walls, about 4 kilometers 223 meters long, are divided into 12 curtain walls and 11 bastions (known as baluardi).
In 1513, following the fall of Pisa, conquered by the Florentines, the General Council, the highest judiciary of the Republic, decided to modernize all the defensive system of the city. In fact, Lucca, had walls since Roman times, but in 1513 they started working on protective circle to give the appearance that still has today. In that year, they began to cut all the trees and the demolition of all buildings, also the religious ones, which were located on the ground dedicated to the new walls. The walls, great and powerful, were only a deterrent and not for their primary purpose, the defense.
