Geocache Description:

Saturday October 12th at 9:00 AM at Platte Ridge Park.  Presented to you by Platte County Parks & Recreation along with doug_hollyNKC, kickrobo and the greatest geocachers in the world (K.C.G.O.).

Join us Saturday October 12th at 9:00AM at Platte Ridge Park in Platte City, Missouri for some fun playground mulching.  The local group of cachers does some amazing things with the CITO's in the area.  This time you get to help out the children in the community and give this playground an upgrade as well as make it a safer place!

Here is a little Q&A segment, that might help you plan for the event!

1.  Will the mulch be dumped in some super giant parking lot or space nearby?

The mulch will be dumped  in a parking lot that is right next to the playground, it is actually the parking lot for the playground/pond/shelter area at Platte Ridge Park.  We also have a shelter in the area that can be a resting spot for some shade and refreshments.

2.  Will Platte Co. have wheel barrows available for use?

We do have 5 wheelbarrows, but if anyone from your group has a wheelbarrow they could bring, that would be great.

3.  Or even better yet, will Platte Co., have a bobcat or some form of a skidsteer hauling it out?

We do have a bobcat, but for safety reasons we try to steer away from using it on volunteer projects.  We will have a couple of our staff members present helping out on this day as well.

4.  Will Platte Co. have rakes to spread the mulch around?

We do have multiple rakes and pitch forks, but just like with the wheelbarrows, it would be great if some volunteers from the group could bring a few along.  This of course will depend on how many volunteers are going to be able to participate.

5.  How big is the playground / area you are wanting mulch spread around in?

The area we will be mulching is 4,402 square feet.  We will be adding roughly 8 inches of mulch to the playground.  It is going to be around 110 cubic yards of mulch, so the more volunteers the better!

6.  Is there a difference in "certified" play ground mulch and the normal mulch the rest of the world knows?

This is a very good questions and the answer is yes, there is a difference.  Certified playground mulch is mulch that is not shredded.  When they produce the mulch it is chipped a certain way, giving it somewhat rounded edges.   This method tries to eliminate the possibility of splinters.  It is also wood from trees only.  Some mulch that you can buy is mulched up wood pallets, or other recycled materials.  The certified playground mulch  is designed to provide a safe surfacing for the kids to play on at all times.
