A puzzle cache located near the site of the (demolished) Caxton ROC post
THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THESE COORDINATES!
These coordinates are actually for the original location of Caxton ROC post. This was an underground monitoring post which was built over 50 years ago at the height of the Cold War. The role of the (volunteer) ROC (Royal Observer Corp) staff was to man these posts and in the event of a nuclear 'event' to monitor the location and strength of the detonation. According to the ROC members I have spoken to, after that, well it appeared to be every man for himself!
Around 1500 of these posts were built around the UK, and whilst a lot have been demolished, many remain, and indeed some have even been restored. There are a number of websites around with details of both the ROC itself, and indexes of posts and the current state of them with pictures. In fact if you look hard you may even find a GPX file online with all the locations ready to load into your GPSr!
There are a number of geocaches located in the vicinity of ROC posts, including my local one (GCYW28). You can also visit GC1782Z, GC32REK and GC3K1GA (which is nearby) as well as others.
Sadly the Caxton bunker was demolished shortly after closure, so there are no remains and nothing at all to be seen here now.
Ultimately a series of themed GCs in the same manner as the 'Sidetracked' series (perhaps as 'Cold War: LOCATION') would be a fitting memory to these structures of a bygone and rather scary time in world history; perhaps in time that may happen......
In order to establish where GZ is, you need to do a little internet based research.....
Date of opening: AB CDEF (AB = month, eg Jan = 01; CDEF = year)
Date of closure: HJ KLMN (HJ = month, eg Dec = 12; KLMN = year)
N 52 1(B+F).(N)(D-A)(H+B)
W 000 0(E-F).(B+C+M)(K)(N-H+J)
You are looking for a camouflaged container a little smaller than a 35mm film container. Although the cache is on a public footpath it can probably be done as a 'cache and dash' once you have solved the puzzle. If so, please park carefully when accessing GZ as the road nearby is very busy.
**Congratulations TelemachusGB on the FTF!!**
