Description et formation
Le roussard est une roche de couleur rouille. C’est une forme de grès, c’est-à-dire qu’elle est issue de l’agrégation de grains de sable qui se sont soudés entre eux au cours d’une diagenèse (ou cimentation) avec un ciment naturel. On le trouve sous la forme de grandes dalles immergées dans un sable ferrugineux. Description and Formation
Roussard sandstone is a rust-colored rock. It is a form of sandstone, that is to say, it comes from the aggregation of grains of sand that are welded together during a diagenesis (or cementation) with a natural cement. It is in the form of large slabs immersed in iron sand. For more information, you will have to read the information sign on-site which will let you to validate your visit (see below logging tasks).
Extraction
Le roussard est une roche que l’on trouve dans le nord de la Sarthe, bien que l’on trouve un grès ferrugineux semblable au roussard sarthois dans le Perche Vendômois. La colline des Bercons, près de Segrie, les forêts de La Bazoge, de La Chapelle-Saint-Fray et de Sainte-Sabine recèlent les traces d’exploitation du roussard en surface. Seule la carrière de La Bazoge au lieu-dit Les Calonnes est encore en activité.
Extraction
Roussard sandstone is a rock found in the north of the Sarthe, although there is a ferruginous sandstone similar of Roussard sandstone of the Sarthe area in the Perche Vendômois. The Bercons’s hill near Segrie, forests of La Bazoge, La Chapelle-Saint-Fray and Sainte-Sabine contain vestiges of operation of Roussard sandstone. Only La Bazoge’s quarry at a place called The Calonnes is still in service.
Utilisation
Le roussard a été très utilisé dans la construction de bâtiments anciens dans tout le Nord-Ouest de la Sarthe. Par exemple les églises de La Bazoge mais aussi de celles de Fresnay, de Segrie ou de Saint-Christophe-du-Jambet ont été construites avec ce matériau. On en retrouve également dans la cathédrale du Mans.
De nombreuses croix massives en roussard sont situées au niveau de carrefours d’anciens chemins. Les plus récentes, de forme octogonale, ornées de coquilles St-Jacques, jalonnent l’itinéraire vers le Mont-Saint-Michel.
Use
Roussard sandstone has been widely used in the construction of old buildings throughout the Northwest of the Sarthe. For example, churches of La Bazoge but also those of Fresnay, Segrie or Saint-Christophe-du-Jambet were built with this material. It is also found in the Le Mans Cathedral.
Many massive Roussard cross are located at crossroads of ancient paths. The most recent, octagonal, decorated with great scallop mark out the route to Mont-Saint-Michel.
Le site est ouvert exceptionnellement certaines années car le tracé du « Trail des Forges » en fait un point de passage. Vous pouvez approcher le site en voiture jusqu’à la grille d’où vous pourrez voir au loin quelques blocs de pierre.
The site is exceptionally opened some years because it’s a checkpoint of the “Trail des Forges”. You can approach the site by car to the gate where you can see in the distance some boulders.

1) Ensuite continuez le chemin à pied dans la forêt pendant environ 300m. Vous arriverez aux coordonnées N 48° 06.903’ E 000° 07.038’. A cet endroit, se trouve un carrefour avec un chemin à gauche et l’autre à droite avec une croix de roussard au milieu.
2) Une fois arrivé à la première croix, une seconde, un peu plus grande, est indiquée par un panneau et se trouve 500m plus loin.
Optional :
