About the Area

The Kálvária Square is a popular park of Szeged, which constantly develops.

The most beautiful building at the square is the building of Déri Miksa Industrial Technical College. It was built in 1914, but in the first years it had to be used as military hospital. After the first world war the building belonged to the university. Even the Nobel-prized scientist, Albert Szent-Györgyi worked here and he first managed to extract vitamin C from pepper here.

A chapel used to stand in the square from 1790 to 1968 on a small hill, with a raw of statues leading to it. (Nowadays these statues can be seen in the yard of the nearby church.) The chapel was damaged in the second world war and afterwards it wasn’t repaired, but even the whole building was razed to the ground. A petrol station was later built at the same place, but it was closed in 2004. The small hill was rebuilt and in September 2011 a cross was stood on the top of it, commemorating the ruined chapel.

The church at the square was built in 1933. As this was the period of blooming neobaroque style, the modern austere style of the catholic church was very daring and uncommon. Its relic is a part from the cross of Jesus.

A triangulation point can also be found on the square. During the rebuilding of Szeged after the 1879 great flood many triangulation points were used for designing but only few are left.

A popular playground is also located on the square.

The square is usually crowded, so be aware of your surroundings while searching for the cache.
