Geocache Description:

Long thin container low down at the edge of the grassy verge along the approach road to Great Thirkleby.

The Parish Church of All Saints was first built in the 12th century, which is apparent from the few fragments of that date, discovered whilst pulling down the later building and excavating for the foundations of the present Church. Fragments of the various successive styles of architecture discovered show the building underwent the usual changes but the fabric was so shattered by the various renovators that it became necessary to completely rebuild it. The current All Saints was designed by the ‘rogue’ Victorian architect Edward Buckton Lamb and was built in 1851 by Lady Frankland-Russell of Thirkleby Park, in memory of her husband. There are several Frankland memorials and other monumental inscriptions in the church. The church is surrounded by open fields and paddocks. Part of the churchyard is a sanctuary for wildlife (YWT Living Churchyard scheme) and it provides a tranquil place to be. A public footpath goes through the churchyard, linking up with scenic walks to Coxwold, Kilburn, the White Horse and beyond. All Saints has 3 bells positioned at the base of the spire and at present these can only be chimed. Thirkleby Bell & Tower Project plans to augment these to a full Ring of Six which will allow change ringing for anyone in the community who wishes to learn, as well as a richer and fuller sounding peal for weddings and other services.
