ABOUT THIS LOCATION
ThaPae Gate (ประตูท่าแพ) is one of the most visible ancient entrances to the old walled city of Chiang Mai. In days gone by it was the gate through which traders, diplomats and visiting monks passed when they had business in the city proper. But it became famous, as well, as the official funeral entrance.
As the main entry route to Chiangmai was from the Ping River and down ThaPae Road to the gate, this was the main thoroughfare of Chiangmai.
Today, Chiangmai is a much larger city with much more business conducted on the outside of the wall than on the inside, but Thapae gate and the ThaPae Road area is still a major thoroughfare. And, still today, ThaPae Gate is a major center for Chiangmai's public city activities and festivals - from political protest to citywide holidays.
This cache is located just South of ThaPae Gate near a local restaurant called Aroon Rai. You do not have to enter the restaurant to grab the cache, as it is just out of view of the restaurant's main entrance. Although I do recommend that you take a chance to grab some Northern Thai dishes while your in town.
The cache is in a very high-muggle area, so please be very careful when grabbing and signing the log on this one. And please bring your own pen.
