Niton is a village just inland from St Catherine’s Point, the southernmost tip of the Isle of Wight. The Parish church, dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and comprises a nave, chancel and north and south aisles, with a western tower surmounted by a stone spire, probably added in the 17th century. The oldest part, the nave, may have been part of the original 11th-century structure, as may have been the Norman font. The church was founded by William Fitz-Osbern and given to an abbey in Normandy. The church was extensively extended through the centuries, and restored and rebuilt in the Victorian era.
In front of the porch is a 19th century Celtic cross by Joseph Clarke, erected on the four steps of the old churchyard cross. Near the Celtic cross a marble monument marks the grave of Edward Edwards (1812–1886), the pioneer of the public library movement.
