Geocache Description:

Cache and Dash situated near to the church or if you have time, please have a look at the church itself. You are looking for a bison tube so please BYOP.

The parish church of Flemingston is dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel and the original church was built by a member of the Le Fleming family in the early 13th century. The present structure dates from the early 14th century.

In the north-west corner of the nave is a memorial monument to Iolo Morganwg and his son Taliesin. A stonemason by trade he taught himself to become both poet and historian and eventually literary forger. Out of a peculiar desire to prove that Glamorgan had a richer tradition than any other county, he fabricated folk tales, historic records and manuscripts. After his death, his son bound his papers into volumes that are now in the National Library of Wales. His remains, together with those of his son, are buried in the churchyard.

There once stood on the apex of the transept gable a blue lias limestone sundial which had a reputation for great accuracy. This was erected by a former rector, the Reverend Edward Pritchard who died in 1742 at the advanced age of 109 years. He was a remarkable man who possessed a great knowledge of astronomy and was a close friend of Sir Isaac Newton who visited him in Flemingston on many occasions.

Congratulations to ShortyTaffy on FTF, how quick you were!

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
