Church Micro 3866 - St. Peters, Stonebroom
For most of its history, Stonebroom was just a tiny hamlet with no church of its own- for centuries, the people of Stonebroom had to walk to either Shirland or Morton.
In 1864 Father J.W. Maltby became Rector of Morton, and a year later the No. 5 shaft was sunk at Morton Pit. A rapid expansion of mining followed, and Stonebroom grew in size as men were attracted to the area to get work in the colliery. Father Maltby got hold of four or five cottage in Stonebroom and turned them into a Mission Hall. The Mission Hall was used for 20 years until Father Maltby built an Iron Church to replace it. This was in use as a church until 1900.
Father W. Round was appointed full time priest in charge in 1885 and set about building a permanent church to replace the ‘tin tabernacle.’ The working people of Stonebroom raised £2300 to build the present church building. The old Iron Church was kept in use as a church hall until it was demolished in the 1970s. A bell tower was planned to complete the building in 1900, but still remains undone.
