Fontes Termais, Gêisers e Fumarolas
Fonte termal é a emergência de água subterrânea aquecida (aquífero termal), seja pelo calor causado pelo gradiente geotérmico, seja por processos de vulcanismo. As fontes termais existem em toda a Terra, incluindo o fundo dos oceanos. Em regiões vulcânicas, como os Açores, a água pode simplesmente ser aquecida por contato direto com o magma. As altas temperaturas prevalecentes na bolsa magmática são suficientes para permitir que a água entre em ebulição. No caso da água formar vapor sobre pressão, origna um gêiser, isto é, uma fonte de vapor quente que não é dissipada numa base contínua. Caso apenas atinga a superfície da terra na forma de vapor, trata-se de uma fumarola. Algumas misturas com água com lama e barro fervilham e são denominadas piscinas de lama.
A Ponta da Ferraria é uma fajã lávica formada por escoadas lávicas basálticas emitidas do cone de escórias do Pico das Camarinhas, há 870 anos. Entre as diversas estruturas vulcânicas deste local, são de referir: o cone litoral (ou pseudocratera), a nascente termal submarina de 62º C e os xenólitos ultramáficos. Numa das nascentes termais a água mistura-se com o oceano numa piscina natural protegida por rochas. A água, que nasce a 62ºC, aquece as águas do oceano entre 18ºC e 28ºC, dependendo da maré, numa mistura de água termal salgada. Considerada um cenário único no mundo, devido à existencia de água termal salgada, com elevadas concentrações de enxofre, usadas no tratamento de reumatismo e nefrite.

Para validar esta earthcache deve estacionar perto das Termas da Ferraria, e descer o trilho e escadas até à piscina natural. Nesta deve procurar as escadas (mostradas na fotografia), e responder às seguintes questões:

Hot Springs, Geysers, and Fumaroles
A hot spring is a spring that is produced by the emergence of exothermally heated groundwater from the Earth's crust. There are geothermal hot springs in many locations all over the crust of the earth. In volcanic zones such as the Azores, water is heated by coming into contact with magma (molten rock). The high temperature gradient near magma may cause water to be heated enough that it boils or becomes superheated. If the water becomes so hot that it builds steam pressure and erupts in a jet above the surface of the Earth, it is called a geyser. If the water only reaches the surface in the form of steam, it is called a fumarole. If the water is mixed with mud and clay, it is called a mud pot.
“Ponta da Ferraria” is a lava delta formed by basaltic lava flows emitted from “Pico das Camarinhas” scoria cone, 870 years ago. Among the many volcanic features in the geo site, the most relevant are the littoral cone (or pseudo crater), the thermal water springs and the ultramafic xenoliths. On one of the underwater hot spring the water flows directly into the ocean, on a natural protected pool. The water rises at 62º C, mixing with the ocean and depending on the tide the ocean water is heated from 18ºC to 28ºC, on a salted thermal water mixture. Considered a unique scenario in the World, due to the existence thermal salt water with a high concentration of sulfur, the waters of Ferraria, are used in treating rheumatism and nephritis.

In order to claim this earthcache you should park the car near the Thermal Spa of Ferraria, walk down to the natural pool, look for the stairs (in the above picture) and answer the following questions:
