Geocache Description:

My sixth placed geocache.

You are looking for a disguised micro sized container that has a log book inside only. Please bring your own pen / pencil.

Parking is available at the nearby waypoint. If seeking this cache on a Sunday, please respect the church goers and give priority for elderly or disabled users to park.

Please take care when walking from the parking to GZ and keep an eye on young cachers and geohounds - the road around the church can be busy at times.

You do not need to enter the church grounds to find the cache, but it is worth having a look around the church if you are able. It is a lovely little church where my two children were christened in October 2012.

The cache is not placed in or on the stone wall. Please do not destroy or damage the wall looking for the cache!

Good luck!

St Illtyd's Church

A question that is invariably asked by visitors is: ‘How old is Llanharry Church?’ The simple answer is that the present building dates only to 1868, when the old church was knocked down and completely rebuilt. There are, however, several features such as the font and the chancel arch that can be dated to pre-Reformation times. We also know for sure that there was a Norman church here and in all probability an even earlier place of worship.

Two small pieces of evidence support the possibility of a Celtic church being established at Llanharry some time in the Dark Ages. Firstly, there is the dedication. The church is dedicated to St. Illtud (Illtyd), the founder of the great monastery and school at Llantwit Major in the 5th century. Illtud, who is culted throughout South East Wales, may have himself carried the Christian faith to these parts and established a small cell at Llanharry.

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”

Well done to bigpinkmuffin on FTF!
