Wenn gering viskose (relativ flüssige) Lava fließt (Pahoehoe-Lava), dann liegen oft viele dünne Lavaschichten übereinander. Die Verwitterung setzt nun bevorzugt an diesen Grenzflächen zwischen den
einzelnen dünnen Schichten an, da dort der Zusammenhalt des Gesteins geringer ist. Sie schreitet dann in konzentrischen Lagen voran. Optisch erinnert es an eine aufgeschnittene Zwiebel.
