Bird-House Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

hikerboy: Seeing as the nearby Cabot Head Lighthouse will not be opening this season, I am archiving this cache because it is too long a drive out for just the cache. Also I understand that the municipality will soon be gating the access road.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located on the beautiful and remote Cabot Head headland where the road splits off to the Bruce Peninsula BIRD Observatory and to the Cabot Head LightHOUSE, hence the name. The cache is located on public land but the general Cabot Head area is a mixture of public and private ownership; camping is not permitted anywhere in the area or the access road and picnics, etc, only the Cabot Head Lightstation, which is open for day visits.

This cache is named for the Bruce Peninsula Bird Observatory and the Cabot Head Lighthouse, since it is located where the long (9km) and isolated shore road from Dyers Day splits off to these two places. It is a beautiful area with a true wilderness feel to it, and well worth the drive. The bird observatory is not open to visitors except by prior arrangement. However, the historic (1895) lighthouse is open to the public 10-7 daily from mid-May to mid-October and it is possible to go in and up to the top for a stunning view.

You should get great reception in this wide-open area. Night-caching is possible but strongly discouranged. There is no poison ivy in the immediate vicinity of the cache but it is rampant in this area (and the Bruce Peninsula generally) so be sure you can identify it.

The cache is stocked with good quaity items (please do not leave crap... "trade up or trade even") and has space for larger trade items and travel bugs. There is a special prize (see image gallery) for the first-to-find.

Please record your cache visit clearly in the log, it will be reconciled with online log entries.

Most cachers should be able to readily find this cache without the clue, though it may not be quite what you expect, so leave some challenge and save the clue unless absolutely necessary.
