Dartmoor is always wet, it’s made of impervious granite, and this means bogs. They cover about a third of the area of the National Park, and about half of the moor proper. They are a hazard to navigation and have a habit of being on the wrong side of your boot leather!
There is a famous Dartmoor tale of a man who passed a bog and saw a hat floating in the middle of it. He worked his way over to it, and on lifting the hat found a head underneath. The owner of the head promptly asked for help to get free, and the rescuer produced a rope. He asked the man where he should secure the rope, and was told it would be best to attach it to the horse on which he was sat.
The danger of the bogs is probably exaggerated, but they are certainly unpleasant to wander into inadvertently, and are best avoided.
The cache is on Kennon Hill, an island in a sea of surrounding bogs: Whitemoor Marsh to the East, Ruelake Pit and Gallaven Mire to the South and West, with the infamous Raybarrow Pool to the North and West.
There is a relatively dry approach to this area from Gidleigh, over Buttern Hill, but even the well-marked track can get boggy at times, so take care.
