Dore Abbey was founded in 1147 and is known as Church of the Holy Trinity and St Mary Abbey Dore. It is situate in the Golden Valley and the Herefordshire Trial runs through the grounds. The construction works commenced in 1175 with the Abbey being consecrated in 1275. The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII and bought by a local land owner John Scudamore in 1537. Thereafter the monastic buildings, nave and Abbey roof were dismantled and the stone sold. They Abbey stood as a roofless ruin until around 1630. It was suggested to John Scudamore's great-great grandson by a Archbishop that he should restore the ruins of the Abbey in penance of his ancestors actions and the rebuilt church was consecrated in 1634. Further restoration works took place in 1700 and 1900 - the church now remains little changed from 1900.
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
