This Cache is placed just off the Longdendale trail and can be access by foot or by car. It can be Incorporated into a lovely walk picking up other caches along the way. This is a medium sized container with a little something for the FTF and swabs.
The Longdendale Trail follows the alignment of the former Woodhead railway line which used to run between Manchester and Sheffield (and closed east of Hadfield in 1981). It has shallow gradients and a smooth surface that makes it popular with families, cyclists and horse riders. This is a lovely place to start the top end of the trail and on nice days you can see the sailor out on the reservoir. Torside reservoir was constructed in 1864 to supply drinking water to Greater Manchester. It is the largest artificial lake in the Longdendale Valley, covering an area of 160 acres, and when full is 2.25 km long, 26m deep and holds 6,700 mega litres (nearly 1.5 million gallons) Glossop & District Sailing Club was originally started by local enthusiasts in the 1970s, initially on Bottoms Reservoir, moving to Torside Reservoir in 1984. Since then, the club has grown its facilities :in 1995 a race control centre was built and a boat-store, and in 2004 the slipway widened. In 2006 the clubhouse galley and bar, were refurbished.
