The Wawel Dragon

During your 2 to 3 hours long adventure you will walk through the historic center of the city and... try to defeat the dragon.

Are you brave enough to face the Wawel Dragon?

Note for people that does not know english

The Legend - The Wawel Dragon

The oldest known account of the story comes from 12th century, in the work by Wincenty Kadłubek.

A popular version of the Wawel-dragon tale takes place in Kraków during the reign of King Krakus, the city's legendary founder.
Each day the evil dragon would beat a path of destruction across the countryside, killing the civilians, pillaging their homes and devouring their livestock.

In many versions of the story, the dragon especially enjoyed eating young maidens, and could only be appeased if the townsfolk left a young girl in front of its cave once a month.

The King certainly wanted to put a stop to the dragon, but his bravest knights fell to its fiery breath. In the versions involving the sacrifice of young girls, every girl in the city was eventually sacrificed except one, the King's daughter Wanda.
In desperation, the King promised his beautiful daughter's hand in marriage to anyone who could defeat the dragon.

Great warriors from near and far fought for the prize and failed. One day a poor cobbler's apprentice named Skuba accepted the challenge. He stuffed a lamb with sulphur and set it outside the dragon's cave. The dragon ate it and soon became incredibly thirsty. He turned to the Vistula River for relief and drank and drank. But no amount of water could quench his aching stomach, and after swelling up from drinking half the Vistula river, he exploded.

Skuba married the King's daughter as promised, and they lived happily ever after.

The Cache - Useful information

As already mentioned the adventure should not take you more than 3 hours. It was designed mainly for tourists, so you should have no problems completing it even during your first visit in Krakow.

You will not require any kind of special equipment to finish the quest - just a simple tourist guide and a map (it might help a little bit).

Remember: Read descriptions of characters, items and tasks - there is always a tip what should be done to move the story forward. Read the tips and you will not going to get stuck.

To finish the game it is required to walk for about 5km through the city. You can use your bike to complete the game - there will be no need to enter buildings or cross the green areas of the city. In my opinion completing the game should be also available for people using wheelchairs or strollers, but I did not check the whole path from this perspective.

This Wherigo will take you to the best known landmarks of the city, so it can easily be a base for an Old Town sightseeing. There is no stage in this game which requires to be in a hurry.

The game should be available for completion 24/7. There is no place that should be visited during usual 9-17 working hours, but if you would like to see the interior of the Wawel Castle and the University you should start playing this game before 15.00 (3pm).

The area that needs to be visited at the castle spreads outside the walls (which are closed at nights). If you cannot enter the casle through the main gate, please find the side entrance and you will be able to move the story forward no matter if the casle is open or closed.

At the end of your quest you will be guided to a magnetic micro container with the logbook (PET container). To log "found" you should find this container and unlock the cartridge at wherigo.com; unlock code will be displayed at the end of the adventure.

Have fun and enjoy Krakow! :-)
