Geocache Description:

St Peter' Church is sometimes known as St Peters in the fields, it is the Parish Church for over 12000 people in Braintree and Bocking.

St Peters in the field
Although this may not be the most attractive or oldest looking church, this church definately holds a little history. The Church was built in 1897 and was funded from a bequest from Miss Frances Wakeham who died in 1893. Miss Wakeham left the sum of £4500 towards the building of a second church in Bocking. Originally St Peters was conceived as a single building seating 300 people. However, it was felt that due to a possible increase in population, the church needed the facility to seat 600 people. The early finances of the Church were such that the Church was often in debt and so no money could be raised to finance the building of a larger church. To this day the Church was never finished and just consists of a nave, chancel and vestries. The side aisles were part of the original plan but never completed. The Church is built of yellow brick. The roof is surrounded by a belfry which again was never finished. It has two bells which, silent for many years after being struck by lightning, have recently been rehung and are now in regular use again. The most impressive architectural feature of the Church is the west window. This is a fine example of twentith century stained glass by Leonard Walker. The Church has a very recent addition which is a bronze sculpture of St Peter which is over 5ft tall and was a gift to the church from the Vicar, Revd Fr. Trevor Diaper, to mark its centenary. The cache is a micr cache, which only holds a log book so please ensure you bring a pen. The cache is located in a very busy area so please be discreet and please rehide well.
