Geocache Description:

GEORGE PENNY

The plight of George Penny still remains a mystery. He was an accomplice of William Armstrong and George Chamberlain who murdered the goldbuyer, Cornelius Green, on the 6th January 1859. (see William Armstrong for details).

The Victorian records show two George Pennys, but there is no evidence to connect them to the George Penny accompanying Armstrong and Chamberlain.

There is a reference to George Penny as "Sydney Penny", which was made in a letter written by Chamberlain to a man named Paynter, before the police caught up with him. In the letter he referred to Sydney Penny being chained in a room in the new police quarters and that he believed that he would either escape or they would not have sufficient evidence against him.
