You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave marker for Jesse Beams, a Veteran of the Civil War.
Jesse enlisted as Private on September 5, 1863 in Hatcher's Battalion at Demopolis, Alabama. He reenlisted as a Private in January 1864 in Company D of the 8th Alabama Cavalry.
His unit fought in battle at Fort Blakely, in Baldwin County, Alabama on the east shore of Mobile Bay, a battle or siege that lasted from April 2, 1865 to April 9, 1865. The Union forces had moved along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, forcing the Confederates back into their defenses. Union forces then concentrated on Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. By April 1, Union forces had enveloped Spanish Fort, thereby releasing more troops to focus on Fort Blakely. Brigadier General John R. Liddell, with about 4,000 men, held out against the much larger Union force until Spanish Fort fell on April 8, allowing Canby to concentrate 16,000 men for the attack on April 9. Sheer numbers breached the Confederate earthworks compelling the Confederates to capitulate. The siege and capture of Fort Blakely was basically the last combined force battle of the war.
Jesse was wounded in his leg during the battle at Fort Blakely. Even with his wound, Jesse lived to be 96 years old.
