This is one of a series of caches to celebrate the Great Western Railway, affectionately known as 'God's Wonderful Railway'. This is your chance to release your inner 'anorak' and go trainspotting, feel free to wear that 'Parka' that's been hanging in the wardrobe for decades!
Hollicombe cutting was originally a tunnel when the railway was first built, known then as Breakneck Tunnel.
The tunnel was 145 yards long.
It was made into a cutting in 1908 to facilitate an extra track, as when Brunel had built it there was only one broad gauge line.
On the 23rd of June 1937 a locomotive managed to 'runaway' from it's engine driver at Torre and it wasn't until it got to the catch points at Hollicombe that it crashed (See photo).
Imagine the wasted money on inquiries nowadays if that scenario were to happen.
