Geocache Description:

The church of St Petrock is one of three local church parishes dedicated to the saint. The others are at Timberscombe and Parracombe. This church is in the South Molton deanery and Diocese of Exeter.

St Petrock is one of the West Country's most celebrated saints, with 21 churches named after him in Devon alone.

Unusually for a man of the 6th century he certainly got around. His chief mission was to convert the Celts of Dumnonia to the Christian religion. When he was about 40 he made his base or minster at Padstow, which means Petrock's church. From there he off on his missions around Dumnonia.

It's thought he almost certainly he came to Exmoor, although not necessarily to all the places named after him. Possibly his monks or disciples may have set up churches in his name.

There is a legend that he once lived at Charles, where there was a chapel dedicated to him. His feast day is June 4th.

This church to St Petrock probably dates from the 14th century though it contains a Norman font. It underwent restoration in 1879 by William Whyte. The unsually plain, stained glass windows are 19th century.

This small church was the one attended by Mr O's grand parents who lived at nearby Woods Farm.
