D’une superficie de 120 hectares, sur 2,5 km de long entre le pont de Bellerive et le pont-barrage, ce plan d’eau est en fait l’extension du premier plan d’eau conçu sous Napoléon III en 1868. Il permet la pratique des compétitions nationales et internationales de sports nautiques : aviron, ski nautique, voiliers, hors-bords, etc. À pied, en footing, en roller, à vélo ou même en rosalie, le tour du plan d’eau est une balade incontournable. Cette promenade d’environ 6 km, vous fera passer par le parc Napoléon, fouler les planches de la nouvelle Esplanade du Lac d’Allier jusqu’au pont-barrage, pour longer ensuite, en rive gauche, le Centre omnisports, l’hippodrome, la marina et le golf avec un point de vue imprenable sur la ville.
