Sign of the Boot Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

In 1772 thru 1776, Samuel Oliver registered a tavern at this site under "The Sign of the Boot". The popular crossroads kept the tavern in business continuing till 1865 when Edwin Oakley registered it as The Boot Tavern.

In 1866, Oakley registered it again as The Boot Inn, and in the following year as The Boot Hotel. Maybe that didn't go over very well, as the subsequent year it was back as The Boot Tavern.  I have no idea when it met its' demise, but it is still visible on maps from the 1930's. Only a few ruins are left today.

William Everhart, before he made a hefty fortune developing West Chester and getting himself elected to Congress, lived at the Boot in the 1810's - 1820's while operating a general store he built at the intersecting "V" of Ship and Boot Rds., about 150 yards away. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Best to park at the 7-Eleven and run the gauntlet to reach the cache. Or cross at the stoplight which isn't much better. Some bushwacking may be required in the summer.
