This cache is located within the Shenandoah National Park, and can
be easily reached using the Appalachian Trail. It is actually the
virtual location of what was once a popular traditional Geocache.
The physical cache was removed when the NPS prohibited traditional
geocaches within its parks. The view from this spot is so beautiful
that I decided to keep the cache in place as a virtual so that all
can continue to enjoy the breathtaking view.
You can access the AT directly at Doyles River Parking Area at
mile 81.1 on the Skyline Drive; from this point it is a hike of
about 0.8 mile to the coordinates. Alternatively, you could come in
from the Loft Mountain Wayside at mile 79.5 and use the campground
trail to access the AT, a hike of about 1.3 miles.
There is also a "wimpy route", available only seasonally. It's
described in the hint below. Decrypt it only if you really hate
walking, or are physically challenged. You'll miss a GREAT
hike.
A few words for those not familiar with the SNP:
You WILL see deer. Well-meaning idiots have fed these deer by
hand and even from car windows, causing them to lose their natural
fear of man. They're constantly hit by cars, and those that aren't
eventually wander out of the park and are easy game for hunters,
usually shot at point-blank range while they beg for food. DON'T
FEED THE DEER.
You MAY also see bears. These are black bears, not aggressive
like grizzlies, but they're attracted by food and are generally not
afraid of you. Use ordinary caution and you should be fine. Follow
the park rules, be nice to the land and the wildlife, and have
fun!
