Geocache Description:

Big Rock Cemetery. Capt. Simon Baxter was feeling discouraged. He and his Indian guide had paddled up the Kennebecasis River looking for a home-site for Baxter. However, he had seen nothing but rocks, hills and marshes; but now the valley widened with meadows beyond. He signed to the Indian to land. There was a sloping bank and at the top shaded by trees, a large mossy rock. Simon Baxter looked around and liked the place and thought it might make good farming land. He said aloud, "Here I will live and beside this rock will I be buried." The Indian had some knowledge of English, and hearing the mention of being buried; he scrambled into the canoe and paddled off around the bend as fast as he could. Our amazing river - "Little snake" - to the Indians - here forms a curve in the shape of an ox bow. The dismayed Captain had to walk across and rejoin him on the other side. Later Baxter did return to live and to die near there; he was laid to rest beside the Big Rock. Its vicinity was used as a family [burial] ground for several generations. The United Church now owns it, the grounds have been extended and improved but it is still known as the "[Big] Rock Cemetery". In the Old Rock Burying Ground at Norton (now called Big Rock Cemetery at Bloomfield 2005) was found the stone of the Tory captain of New Hampshire who after his eventful escapades in the American Revolution enjoyed a peaceful if strenuously industrious existence on the lands awarded to him by the crown. His allotment of 5000 acres was that given to a commissioned officer who had served the King. His tombstone bears the inscription “In Memory of Capt. Simon Baxter who departed this life on the 20, of March 1804. Age 73 years 10 months and 16 days. A lot of my relatives are buried here and I already have my plot here with my Mother, Dad and Wife.
