This cache has been archived.

baggiewhite: The road sign that this cache was hidden at the base of was taken out by a car a few months ago, I've been waiting for it to be replaced so I could replace the cache, but it looks like it may not happen so I have decided to archive it.

Thanks to everyone who visited it and found it over the years

Whittington Church, which stands on the highest point of the village, was built about the 13th century of red sandstone quarried in Hopwas Wood.

The services were taken by the monks who walked over from the Friary, Lichfield. The tower is all that remains of the original building.

After the reformation, the spire was built on to the tower to proclaim to the world the turning to Protestantism.

The nave was rebuilt in 1761 after a fire in 1760 destroyed the original 13th century building, and the chancel added in1880.

The dedication changed to St. Matthew from 1882 until 1892 then reverted to St. Giles.

The parish Registers go back to 1574, with a gap from 1596 to 1667.

The church contains memorial panelling for Samuel Lipscomb Seckham (1827–1900), architect and the High Sheriff of Staffordshire, who lived at Whittington Old Hall, a 16th century mansion.

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first at churchmicro@gmail.com so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.

There is also a Church Micro Stats & Information page found via the Bookmark list”
