History of the North House: This fedetal-style house was built by John North in 1820 and purchased in 1836 by James Frazier. Located across the street from the original law library for Greenbrier County, the North House was the perfect location for an inn and tavern. At that time, individuals from as far away as the Ohio Valley had to come to court in Lewisburg. The Star Tavern and Inn was in business until afer the Civil War. In 1862 patrons would have witnessed the Battle of Lewisburg taking place only yards away. In the early 1900's the North House was used as the President's home for the Greenbrier College. Greenbrier College was originally known as the Lewisburg Female Institute, later known as Greenbrier College for Women. It was all-girl school that closed in 1972. It is now the site of the New River Community and Techinical College. Today the North House is the location of the Greenbrier Valley Historical Society and North Museum. Founded in 1963, GHS is dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of the Greenbrier Valley, and it strives to create interestion programs, exibits and events that educate as well as entertain. The museum contains many interesting documents and artifacts pertaining to the Greenbrier County.
