The civic offices of Dublin City Council are located on Wood Quay in the city centre. Apart from the proposed nuclear power plant at Carnsore Point in Co. Wexford, this development was the most controversial in the history of the State.
Wood Quay was universally regarded as being one of the finest Viking sites in the world. The plans of the Corpo to develop massive civic offices on the site were seen as sacrilege of the national heritage, and led to thousands taking to the streets in opposition. The leader of the opposition, the historian Fr. F.X. Martin, became a household name throughout the late 1970s. However, his best efforts were to no avail, and construction was substantially completed in 1979-1980.
The term 'The Bunkers' was used in the most derogatory way possible, and referred to the architectural style popular in the 1950s and 1960s used for cheap housing and shopping centre developments constructed with mass concrete and seen as devoid of aesthetic beauty.
In the early 1990s, a new block fronting the River Liffey was added, and this helped to soften the overall appearance.
The cache is wheelchair accessible from the Fishamble Street direction. Culture vultures will be aware that Fishamble Street played host to the first performance of Handle's Messiah.
