Côte 67 - Le Mémorial de Cindais
Le Mémorial de Cindais est situé sur la commune de Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay, sur la cote 67. L'emplacement est en fait le point de départ de l’offensive canadienne pour repousser la contre-attaque allemande en juillet 1944. Ce Mémorial se présente comme un chemin le long duquel sont érigées des stèles dédiées à chaque régiment. Il s’inscrit dans les circuits historiques de la région. Contexte de la bataille
Canadiens et Allemands en enfer
Après la prise de Caen, le 19 juillet 1944, Canadiens et Britanniques poursuivent leur avance vers le sud avec pour objectif Falaise. L'opération Spring est lancée le 24 juillet. Après une intense préparation d’artillerie, les Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, de la 6e Brigade, arrivent devant Saint-André-sur-Orne. Les Canadiens subissent des pertes terribles face aux positions allemandes enterrées, le Black Watch of Canada est décimé devant Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay. L'assaut reprend le 28 et se heurte aux contre-attaques de la 9e SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen. Le 1er août, Saint-André-sur-Orne et Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay sont dégagées, et resteront sur la ligne de front jusqu'à l'opération Totalize lancée le 7 août. Sur la rive ouest de l'Orne, Vieux est libéré par la 43rd Wessex Infantry Division le 4 août.

Durant la poussée sur la poche de Falaise, dans le petit village de « le Mesnil » , près de Tournebu, un obus allemand de gros calibre s’est abattu sur le petit bâtiment près duquel notre véhicule était stationné. Blessé à la tête par les éclats (le 14 août 1944) je fus emmené au poste de secours régimentaire où je décédais le 16 août.
J’avais 32 ans et je suis enterré au cimetière militaire de Bayeux dans le Calvados…

During the thrust to close the Falaise gap, in the small village of « Le Mesnil », near Tournebu, a German heavy calibre shell hit the small building near which our vehicle was parked. Wounded on the head by shrapnel (at august 14, 1944) I was taken to a regimental aid post where I died on august 16.
I was 32 years old and I'm buried in Bayeux War Cemetery in Calvados…
