Welcome to Saint Nicholas’ Church, Winterborne Kingston. Christians have worshiped in the church, on this site, for centuries; there is evidence that worship here, stretches back as much as 900 years. Much of the original building was constructed in the 14th century, which was further extended some 200 years later. In the Victorian era extensive restoration work was carried out by G. E. Street A.R.A in 1872.
Extensive renovation to the belfry and 4 original bells (three17th and one 18th century) was completed in 1999 together with the installation of three new bells. The 3 oldest original bells are inscribed “Feare God”, “Praise God”, and “Love God”
Above the outer porch door it is just possible to see the marks of an early ‘scratch dial’; a type of sundial used to ensure services started at the correct time. The hole would take a gnomon which would cast a shadow on the dial to show the time.
Today the church is in regular use for worship, but the vicar has a digital watch rather than a sundial.
