In this corner of Black mountain hidden deep in an ex-quarry – sheltered from magnetic fields, you will find the ANU Paleomagnetic laboratory. You don’t need to enter the fenced off area, and therefore won’t visit the paleomagnetic lab directly, but instead, at GZ you will find another interesting spot. An old bunker which is used by the Paleomagnetists during high level magnetic storms!
They quarry was opened in 1941, and stone from the quarry was used in many of Canberra’s early buildings. In 1944 they thought it would never run out of rock!
Oh, I just had another thought… Maybe the bunker is not used by the palemagnetologists, and instead it is an old explosives bunker used when they were blasting the quarry
