Geocache Description:

Hopefully a bit of fun (in Fulwell); the information required can easily be found on the internet, either by reading about the football match (e.g. on Wiki), or by watching the "highlights" (e.g. on YouTube).  I recommend the latter as the sketch only lasts a few minutes and is (in my view!) hilarious.  I particularly liked "the referee, Mr Confucius, checks his sand" and, later, "Confucius he say name go in book".  I hope you enjoy it!

There was a football match between Germany and Greece in 1972 with both teams (and the officials) comprised of, with one notable exception, famous philosophers; Franz Beckenbauer was a surprise inclusion for the Germans.  Confucius (complete with hourglass to keep time) refereed it, with St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas the linesmen (after all, it was 1972, so well before the age of "referee's assistants").

With the sand trickling down, the only excitement has been Nietzsche getting booked for arguing and Karl Marx coming on for Wittgenstein; a nil-nil draw and a replay look inevitable. However, Archimedes has a "Eureka moment" just a minute before full time.  He starts a flowing passing move which ends with him crossing from the right and Socrates heading home.  Some of the Germans argue about the reality of the goal; Karl Marx simply claims that it was offside (which, indeed, it was!).

The stated coordinates are for a convenient entry point to the park, and there is no problem with parking on Burton's Road. The cache is less than 200m away (and is not in the grounds of the golf course), in the vicinity of the make-shift football pitch. If you have time, why not have a quick kick around?  In keeping with the theme of the cache, however, there is only the one goal!

You can find the cache at:

N 51 26.A
W 000 22.B

A = (Schelling x Plotinus) + (Schlegel x Archimedes)
B = (Epicurus x Nietzsche) + (Socrates x Heidegger)

I've included GeoCheck in case you want to make absolutely sure.
