Geocache Description:

Join us Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center for a GPS and Navigation Learning Lab!

Come one, come all to our second Geocaching event at Islands and Ocean.  We will have learning activities for all ages, outdoor games, and information about geocaching in Homer, Alaska.  The Lab will be held in the Kachemak Bay Research Reserve's Discovery Lab classroom, inside of the Islands and Ocean visitor center.

We will have 8 tables set up, with an activity for each.  We'd love to see geocachers from around Alaska come to show folks in Homer what fun can be had with navigation and GPS activities.   We want to reach out to cachers in the community who are familiar with GPS/geocaching as well to possibly help out with some of the outdoor games and activities. Please email IslandsAndOcean through our profile if you are interested in helping out!

Stay tuned for updates in the description and via announcement logs!

Topics and activities will include:

1. The History of Navigation
2. Compasses and Orienteering
3. How do Global Positioning Systems work?
4. GPS unit how-to
5. Finding a waypoint--Get Outside! Cache Passport activity
6. GPS accuracy game
7. Current Research with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Kachemak Bay Research Reserve Using GPS
8. What is geocaching?

We will have print-outs of some local caches to visit in Homer, and can help you find your way around.  After the event is complete, we encourage some of the experienced cachers to be available to take some new cachers out to find some caches around town.

If you are interested in helping out, please get in touch with us via an email through our profile.

There will be staff from the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, Kachemak Bay Research Reserve, Lake Clark National Park, and Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies on hand to answer questions about their work using GPS technology, and more!
