Built in 1942, Strauss Airfield is located 27 miles, or 45 km, south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. During World War II, the facilities here included a 1.5 km long, 30 m wide runway, as well as numerous huts, tents, and aircraft revetments (parking bays). Some remnants of these can still be seen today. The airstrip was used throughout the war and was decommissioned at the end of 1945.
Squadrons of P40s and Spitfires were based here.
