Were Chester Gillette so clever, he might have avoided his mortal endeavor.

*************

This building is the stage setting for a sensational true story of romance gone awry. In 1905, country girl Grace Brown arrived from Beaver Meadows to the big city of Cortland and found employment in the cutting room of the Gillette Skirt Factory. Here she met Chester Gillette - the factory owner’s nephew, stockroom expediter, her lover, and ultimately, her murderer.

The two lives entwined and then unraveled when an unwanted pregnancy ensued. Desperate to manage his social stature and its inherent opportunities, Chester decided to eliminate Grace, his inconveniently expectant working class girlfriend.

In the summer of 1906, poor Grace drowned while on a boating excursion with Chester in the Adirondack Mountains.

Chester was arrested days later and charged with Grace’s murder, her body discovered adrift in the Adirondack setting of Big Moose Lake. Chester would eventually take a hot seat at the Auburn Penitentiary for his callous crime.

The novel, An American Tragedy, by Theodore Dreiser, and a subsequent movie recounted the details of the affair and trial that led to the 1908 execution of the by-then penitent Chester Gillette, a truly American tragedy.
