This cache is located with permission on the property front of a museum. The container is designed to fit and blend with the surrounding theme. It is a regular. It is visibly and easy to find with a cursory look-see. Please be respectful. Museum phone number and hours are posted for those interested in having a look inside. Please seek this cache from dawn to dusk ONLY. Thank You!
Boonsboro was founded in 1792 by two brothers, George and William Boone, cousins of the infamous Daniel Boone. Originally named Margaretsville in honor of William Boone's wife, the town saw its name change several times throughout the years from Margaretsville to Margaret Boones Ville, then to Boonesborough, and finally to Boonsboro.
In 1831, Boonsboro became incorporated and held the town's first election. Some thirty years later in 1862, Boonsboro's churches and public buildings were used as makeshift hospitals for soldiers wounded in the Civil War battles of South Mountain and Antietam. In the late 19th century, Boonsboro was chosen as the setting for a famous Civil War play named "Heart of Maryland" which later became a successful silent motion picture.
In 1939, the citizens of Boonsboro created Shafer Memorial Park as the focal point of the town. Today it hosts major public events such as Boonesborough Days, The Great Boonsboro Rescue Company Carnival, and the Founder's Day Celebration. The latter coincides with the National Pike Festival, which features a 20-mile wagon train journey from Clear Spring to Boonsboro along the original route of the National Pike, now Route 40.
Also citizen created and overlooking Boonsboro on the crest of South Mountain is the first ever monument erected and dedicated to the memory of the first president – now Washington Monument State Park.
