Weit außerhalb der von Wällen und Befestigungsmauern umgebenen Reichsstadt Dortmund standen einstmals zwei Wachttürme: Im Norden der hölzerne Turm am Fredenbaumplatz, im Süden der aus Stein errichtete Wachtturm an der alten Landstraße zwischen Dortmund und Brünninghausen, unweit der Emscher, die hier die Grenze zwischen dem Gebiet der Reichsstadt und dem Territorium des Grafen von der Mark bildete. Der Steinerne Turm, im 14. Jahrhundert errichtet, ist bis heute erhalten. Neben ihm steht heute die große Westfalenhalle I am Rheinlanddamm.
Einstmals war der Turm Tag und Nacht von Wachtposten besetzt. Sie hielten Ausschau nach allem, was sich der Stadt näherte. Wenn sich in Fehdezeiten verdächtige Heerhaufen zeigten, entzündeten die Wächter auf dem Turm ein Feuer oder gaben ein Flaggenzeichen. Das sah der Türmer der St. Reinoldi-Kirche am Westenhellweg in den Mauern der Stadt Dortmund, der sofort Sturm läutete und die Bürger zu den Waffen rief.

Far outside the historical imperial town of Dortmund which was surrounded by ramparts and fortifications two watchtowers existed: In the north the wooden tower at Fredenbaumplatz, in the south the watchtower made of stone situated at the old country road between Dortmund and Brünninghausen, near the river Emscher that formed the boundary between the town area and the territory of Earl von der Mark. The Stone Tower, built in the 14th century, is preserved until now. Today, the big Westfalen Hall I situated at the road Rheinlanddamm can be found next to it.
In former times, the tower was manned by watchmen day and night. They were on the lookout for all that approached the town. Whenever suspicious hordes were seen during feud times, the watchmen lighted a fire at the tower or raised a flag. That was seen by the watchman at St. Reinoldi church at the road Westenhellweg inside the walls of Dortmund, who then immediately sounded the alarm and called the citizens to arms.
