RADIO ROG
A few years before HD TV and Sirius radio I had a 1953 Chevrolet with an AM radio.
The radio was far from what you could call “High Fidelity” as the buzzing and crackling were almost as loud as the music. In northern Minnesota the radio station selection during the daylight hours was very limited. It was mostly WCCO and maybe a local station or two. But as soon as the sun went down, the airwaves came alive with the 50,000 watt “Clear Channel” stations. Some of our favorites of that time period which played top 40 hits were:
890 kHz - WLS - Chicago
1090 kHz - KAAY - Little Rock
1130 kHz- WDGY - Minneapolis
1520 kHz- KOMA - Oklahoma City
1070 kHz- WKRP - Cincinnati
WDGY was usually always listenable while the others would sometimes fade out for no apparent reason. Everyone talked about the possibility of hearing the infamous Wolfman Jack but I doubt many people did. Some guys I knew would install spring reverb units for a real “cool” sound but they would vibrate like crazy on a bumpy road.
