Geocache Description:

The cave Achbinico is now known as the 'Cueva de San Blas'. This amazing place was the second home for the Guanche deity recognised as being the 'Virgin Mary. The Cave is right beside the Basilica in Candelaria

Unfortuneately, at the moment you CANNOT visit the Cave because the Access is closed due to 'Rock falls' which is a pity.

However the Cache is NOT there........ This is a sacred spot.....so if you know the rules, try casting your eyes upwards in prayer..

This is the second of my 'Guanche' series because this is where the Guanches brought there deity 'chaxiraxi' before it was realised that the stature was indeed the Virgin  Mary. It became the first Christian Church in the Canary Islands and it is where the Guanche were baptised

Cueva Archibinico History

According to legend, a statue of the Virgin Mary, bearing a child in one hand and a green candle in the other (hence "Candelaria"), was discovered on the beach of Chimisay, Guimar by two Guanche goatherds in 1392.

One of the shepherds tried to throw a stone at the statue, but his arm became paralyzed; the other tried to stab the statue with a knife but ended up stabbing himself. The statue was taken by the local Guanche Mencey, Acaymo, to the Cueva de Chinguaro. (see GC3YDQ9...1st in the series)

At first, aboriginals identified with the appearance of their goddess Chaxiraxi (the mother of the gods)

Later, Antón, a Guanche who had been enslaved and converted to Christianity by the Castilians, recognized the statue as the Virgin Mary when he returned to Tenerife. He told the mencey of his conversion and the statue was thus venerated by the Guanches, who transportd the statue to the cave of Achbinico (also known as San Blas). However, the statue was stolen and taken away to Lanzarote. It was brought back after the statue supposedly caused various catastophies in Lanzarote.

The original Sculpture was a Medieval Gothic sculpture that many scientists have linked with the Knights Templar, not only for its dark color, but also for her clothes.

The first mass was celebrated at Achbinico on February 2, 1497, and a construction of a Hermitage was ordered, but it was not built until 1526. This basilica was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 19th century. The statue itself was lost when a tsunami carried it out to sea in 1826. The present statue is a copy by Fernando Estevéz.

She was declared patroness of the Canary Islands in 1559. and is now the most important and venerated 'Holy Entity' in the Canary Islands. She is housed in the Basilica of Candelaria. (see GCPC10 by Lacruz18)

The cache is ABOVE the Cave and always has been!!! (please read hint)

You are wasting your time trying to access it from Sea level

Warning:-   This cache should not be attempted in the dark as the rocks are slippery and a serious fall could result. There are no guard rails.
