Geocache Description:

This cache replaces the former Spuds and Herring linked caches.

The trail starts at the given co-ordinates (Stage A) and takes you on a stroll around Port St. Mary harbour.

"Palchey puddase as skeddan dy liooar" - Potatoes in plenty and herring enough.

I’m a crofter fisherman on the Isle of Man but, like some of my friends, I’d like to try something a bit more lucrative and a bit more exciting. We smoke our surplus herring to preserve them and I’ve heard it’s possible to ship these kippers, also known as red herrings, to the Mediterranean then return with cargo such as spirits, tobacco and silks.  Anyone importing these goods into a port in England or Wales must pay a high duty to the government in London, here on the island the taxes are much lower. That means I could sell the goods across in England or Scotland more cheaply and still make a good profit! It must be worthwhile, look at the fine houses like Balladoole and Crogga House, built using the proceeds of such trade. Of course, some would call it smuggling but in these parts it’s considered almost legitimate trade, after all, who wants to pay taxes to a government 300 miles away that speaks only English and doesn’t have the Gaelic?

Of course, I’ll need a secret boathouse to hide my boat from any English civil servants who come around snooping and a crew I can trust to be discreet. I’ll tell you where I’m recruiting them from, but I’m only going to use first names as I don’t want to get them into trouble. I kind of trust them but I’m only going to give each one a single piece of information about where I’m going to hide the booty until I can ship it out again. In fact, the last bit of information will be concealed at the boathouse, so even if they all collaborate they’ll be short of the final piece.

Only with every clue will you find the whereabouts of this cache of goodies.

I’m hiding the goods where I’ll have a good view of the harbour, so I can keep a lookout for approaching customs officials, at N54 04.ABC W004 44.DEF.  To get the correct number from each crew member, add up the number of letters in each one’s name, just first name remember, then do any sum given for them. To get the final F, add up the numbers in the date the boathouse was built and subtract the given number.

A = My first crew member is a lady artist, she can draw pictures of fish on our barrels to fool the customs officials!
B = The pier is named for my second crew member - 2
C = This one looks to be ill with a kind of fever or jaundice, hopefully he’ll sound great soon - 2
D = The hotel's named after him - 4
E = The friend of the grate Staveley - 3
F = The boathouse date (sum of the numbers) - 24
